Spring Refresh

After months of cold, windy, dreary days, many of us look forward to the first signs of spring.  Sunny and warmer days gives us the urge to spruce up our homes and embrace the energy that comes with the new season.  It can be difficult to know where to begin, but we find that starting with your front porch can be an easy, budget friendly way to give your home that spring refresh.

We’ve rounded up 5 ways to refresh your front porch for spring.

One. Layer a front doormat on top of a patterned accent rug
We love layering an accent rug underneath a doormat.  It instantly adds some personality and pattern to your front porch.

Two. Update the way you display your house numbers
When thoughtfully selected, house numbers can give the exterior of your home a certain flair, setting your home apart from the rest.

 Three. Paint your front door
Painting your front door is a great way to update the front of your home. A fresh new colour can completely change the look and boost curb appeal! We love seeing the new paint colour trends come out each year.

Four. Add a floral wreath
Adding a floral wreath will give your front door dimension and interest.  It’s also a great way to add colour and texture.

Five. Front porch accessories
Incorporating décor allows for a warm inviting space. Placing lanterns or galvanized pails with candles in them, adding accent pillows on furniture for added colour and comfort or maybe display some artwork.

Our Top Hardware Picks: A High and Low Budget Adventure!

Hot off the tails of last week’s blog post, we are talking hardware options. Switching out your hardware can be an easy refresh to your cabinets or furniture piece, another bonus is the millions of options there are too choose from!

For this week’s post we have rounded up our top six hardware styles and given you two budget options, because you know we love a good deal! In addition to seeing our favourite styles, we are answering some of the basic questions that come with choosing and/or changing your hardware.

Question One: Knob or Pull?

The choice of hardware shape you pick is totally dependant on two things; what works for the piece and what works for you in your everyday life. What we mean by your hardware working for you is the need of making sure that yes your piece looks great, but is it functional? There is a reason that knobs are so popular for lighter weighted pieces and pulls for larger ones.

Question Two: Detailed or Keep it Simple?

Because there are so many options to choose from in the design world, it is good to narrow down your search to these two basic categories; simple or detailed. We love the beautiful touch that a detailed knob or pull can add to a simple piece. But, there is something to be said for keeping things clean, simple and classic. Check out these inspiration pics from Rejuvenation and I Spy DIY:

Let us know your thoughts on the topic; Is hardware splurge-worthy? If so, why? If not, why not?!

Question Three: Splurge or Save?

The age old question in the interior design world, “Should I splurge or save?”. There are many variables that can help guide you make this decision, i.e. What is my budget? What is this piece’s purpose? How many do I need? Do I need to replace my existing piece or just give it a facelift with my handy-dandy spray paint?

Because we cannot make those decisions at this time, check out our picks below and let us know your thoughts on the topic; Is hardware splurge-worthy? If so, why? If not, why not?!

Cabinet Paint Trends : An Intro to Reno Season!

We all know that Autumn is the season for spooky tales and gathering with family to give thanks. We interior design fanatics also know that Fall is renovation season! Our whole team has started conducting their own home projects these past few weeks, so we feel now is a great time to launch a new blog series.

Over the next few weeks, we will be giving inside looks into what we have going on in our homes with the hopes of inspiring you to do the same!

For this week’s post we are talking cabinet paint trends. In recent years, many home DIY-ers have taken on the challenge of kitchen makeovers on a budget. As we all know, the possibilities are endless when it comes to kitchens and it is pretty much possible to give your space the fresh look you want with any budget.

Painting and refinishing cabinets is a great way to cut costs in your project, as well as minimize unnecessary waste. We at Monk & Nun love giving our pieces a refresh if their bones are still intact, which is the case for many kitchen cabinets!

Check out below some of our top cabinet paint colors from Benjamin Moore.

The great thing about painting your cabinets is that you can really make them a statement in your kitchen by choosing a color like Wrought Iron or Saybrook Sage, or you can jump on the earthy toned trend (which we always love) and go for shades like Cream Silk or Swiss Coffee. The options are limitless!

One - A twist on a classic Fall staple, these white, ceramic pumpkins still get the job done! In various sizes
and in a pack of three, they make for a great filler to spread around your porch.

Two - We love to use multiples of the same item at different sizes, these lanterns make no exception.
Group them together or spread them throughout your space, they bring a big presence as well as
soft rounded edges to not break up the effortless flow of your design.

Three - Who doesn’t appreciate being met with a quirky door mat?! This hand crafted door mat is a tasteful
way to greet your guests as they take in your beautifully autumn space. We think its super cute and
has the potential to stick around all fall long!

Four - We always encourage bringing natural elements into your designs and this is a great season to do
so! If you are not as lucky as some of us and do not have the resources to pluck your own autumnal
arrangement, check out these different pieces we have found. The great thing about going artificial
is that you can reuse in crafts and designs in the future!
Lotus Pods, Burgundy Berries, Tri-Colored Eucalyptus, Dried Cat Tail

Five - What would a floral arrangement be without a vessel to house it?! We have chosen this timeless
milk jug to hold our flowers and fall finds because of its unique look that adds to the space but does
not take away from the other pieces.

Six - Our last item (or items) are totally optional to this design but, we thought we would bring them in
because we are such fans of the rug layering trend. Placing either one of these rugs underneath our
door mat will add dimension as well as texture to the space. The darker option is guaranteed to help
anchor the area where as the lighter option brightens and opens the space. Which one would you
choose?!

As always, let us know what you think of this post in the comments below!
